Episode 44: Burnout: How to Recover
Welcome back to the Going in Grace podcast. Today’s episode is for the weary. For the one who’s been running hard, carrying heavy, and now—feels like they’ve hit a wall.
Maybe you heard the episode about the superhero complex last week and thought, “That’s me.” But it came too late. You’re already burned out.
If that’s you, I want you to know: God sees you. He’s not disappointed. He’s not distant. He’s near. And He’s ready to restore. Let’s talk about the signs of burnout, what Scripture says about it, and how to recover—with God, the Holy Spirit, the Word, and your faith.
Burnout isn’t just physical exhaustion. It’s emotional depletion. It’s spiritual fatigue. It’s the feeling of being poured out with nothing left to give.
Here are some signs:
• You feel numb or disconnected from things you used to care about.
• You’re constantly tired, even after rest.
• You feel resentful of responsibilities that once brought joy.
• You struggle to pray, worship, or read the Word.
• You feel like you’re failing—even when you’re doing your best.
Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV): "A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones."
Burnout dries the bones. It drains joy. It clouds clarity. But it’s not the end. The Bible doesn’t use the word “burnout,” but it speaks directly to the experience.
Matthew 11:28–30 (NKJV): "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
Jesus doesn’t say, “Push harder.” He says, “Come to Me.”
📖 Galatians 6:9 (NKJV): "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."
God acknowledges our weariness. He doesn’t shame it. He meets it.
Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV): "But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint."
Renewal comes from waiting—not striving. If you’re burned out, here’s how to begin healing:
1. Come Back to God—Not as a worker, but as a child. You don’t have to perform. You just have to be.
Psalm 46:10 (NKJV): "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"
2. Let the Holy Spirit Minister to You.
He’s your Comforter, not your taskmaster.
Romans 8:26 (NKJV): "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
Even when you don’t have words, the Spirit does.
3. Return to the Word—Not for duty, but for life. Let Scripture speak to your soul.
Psalm 19:7 (NKJV): "The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;"
Psalm 119:28 (NKJV): "My soul melts from heaviness; Strengthen me according to Your word."
4. Lean on Your Faith—Even if it’s fragile.
Faith isn’t about feeling strong. It’s about trusting God to be strong.
2 Corinthians 4:16 (NKJV): "Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day."
Recovery isn’t instant. It’s intentional. Here’s how to begin:
• Rest without guilt.
Sabbath is not a suggestion—it’s a command.
Exodus 20:10 (NKJV):
"But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work..."
• Release the need to be everything. You’re not the source. God is.
Psalm 127:1 (NKJV): "Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain."
• Rebuild rhythms of grace. Prayer, worship, Scripture—not as tasks, but as lifelines.
Isaiah 30:15 (NKJV): "For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: 'In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.' But you would not."
Don’t be the one who “would not.” Return. Rest. Be saved.
• Reframe your identity. You’re not what you produce. You’re who God loves.
Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV): "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."
You’re His workmanship—not His workforce.
Burnout feels final. But it’s not. It’s a signal—not a sentence. When I burned out for the second time, yes, I managed to break myself twice, I was so undone I couldn’t figure out what to do next. I felt worn and emotionally unstable. It wasn’t a situation I could resolve alone. It took reaching out to family, getting counseling from a trusted woman of God that is also a therapist, and reestablishing norms that I lost over the course of my hurried life. By paying attention to the signal of burnout I was able to recover, and you can too.
God is still with you. The Holy Spirit is still interceding. The Word is still alive. Your faith still matters.
Psalm 23:3 (NKJV): "He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake."
Let Him restore you. Let Him lead you. Let Him love you back to life. Until next time, rest well. You’re not forgotten. You’re not finished. You’re just being restored.
